How an LED video wall actually works
An LED wall isn't one big screen — it's a grid of individual panels, typically around 500mm square, that lock together mechanically and electrically. Each panel carries thousands of LED pixels. Upstream, a video processor maps your content across the grid so that dozens or hundreds of panels behave as a single display.
That modularity is the whole point. The same panel inventory builds a 10-foot ballroom backdrop on Tuesday and a 40-foot festival wall on Saturday. It also means a failed panel gets swapped in minutes without taking down the show, and the wall can be flown from rigging points or ground-stacked on a frame depending on what your venue allows.
Pixel pitch, in plain English
Pixel pitch is the distance between the centers of two neighboring pixels, in millimeters. A 2.6mm wall packs pixels tighter than a 3.9mm wall, so it looks sharp from closer up — and costs more per square foot. The rule of thumb we use: minimum comfortable viewing distance in feet is roughly the pitch in millimeters times three.
- 1.5–2.6mm: broadcast sets, boardrooms, and lobbies where viewers stand within 10–15 feet
- 2.6–3.9mm: the sweet spot for most corporate events, sanctuaries, and stage backdrops
- 4mm and up: concerts, outdoor screens, and any room where the nearest seat is 20+ feet from the wall
Renting a finer pitch than your audience can perceive is the most common way people overspend on an LED screen for events. If the front row is 25 feet out, a 3.9mm wall looks identical to a 2.6mm one and costs meaningfully less.
How big should the wall be?
Two questions drive sizing: how far away is your farthest viewer, and what are you putting on the screen?
- Slides and text: screen height should be at least one-eighth of the distance to the farthest seat, or people in the back are squinting at your speaker's bullet points.
- Camera IMAG and video: faces and motion are forgiving — you can run smaller than you would for text-heavy content.
- Aspect ratio: if you're showing standard 16:9 content full-screen, build the wall to a 16:9 shape. Custom shapes look great but mean custom content.
- Sightlines: the bottom edge needs to clear the heads in front of it — in a flat-floor ballroom that usually means raising the wall or the stage.

We don't publish flat rates because no honest LED vendor can — two walls of the same size can differ in price by multiples. These are the LED wall cost factors that matter:
- Square footage: more panels, more money. This is the biggest lever.
- Pixel pitch: finer pitch costs more per square foot. Match it to viewing distance, not to spec-sheet bragging rights.
- Indoor vs. outdoor: outdoor panels need far higher brightness and weather rating, plus wind-load engineering.
- Rigging vs. ground support: flying a wall requires rated points and riggers; ground-stacking needs floor space and ballast.
- Labor and schedule: load-in windows, overnight builds, and venue labor rules all show up in the number.
- Processing and redundancy: a broadcast or worship application that can't go dark needs backup processing paths a simple backdrop doesn't.
